Oceanarium Zeitgeist, 2017 is an auto-ethnographic exploratory film in response to youthquake being the word of the year 2017. The film works on the perception of synchronisation. With further research into one of my four chosen organisms, the salp, I discovered the salp chain is one of the most efficient swimmers in the ocean (Klein, 2017). As a chain of individual clones, they use jet propulsion as a means of locomotion, working together as one when in troubling situations (strong tides, predators). Away from danger, the salps propel individually at their own rhythm whilst maintaining a steady locomotion through the seas. They work incredibly efficiently as a team and as individuals. Using influence from the salp I chose to focus on group movement, herd behaviour and patterns; shoals of fish and starling murmurations.
